Episode four! I’m so excited about this one you guys. I’ve been publishing this podcast consistently for the last four weeks and I am ecstatic! It was difficult to start but now that it’s up and running we have some serious momentum over here! I’m a part of a podcasting community and I’m encouraged for cool new things in season two of this podcast. There are only good things on the horizon for this adventure, I believe. In the meantime, I’ll focus on what’s happening right now at this very moment.
It’s overcast here in my hometown of Philadelphia. I still love it here as I know the promise of a gorgeous spring is on the way. In this episode I’ll be sharing about the power of stories and ideas, knowing your why, and my secret weapon for taming my inbox and keeping to at zero. Now it’s time to dive on in!
Mindset Minute: Know Your Why
I want to be heard. So many times and in so many circumstances I have not been heard and I’ve had some really amazing things to say that I know change the lives of other people. How crushing it is to be silenced, for whatever reason. Some say it’s racism. Others say it’s sexism. Still others blame age, economic background and / or educational background.
When I know my why, and when you know your why, you have the power within you to be heard, because you have the power to speak. I sacrifice and give of myself because I want other people to experience success in a profound way. I especially love small businesses and I want to be sure they are heard and are embraced for who they are and what they do.
Your why wakes you up. Your why gets you going in the morning. Your why inspires you to prepare well ahead of any looming deadline. Knowing, cultivating, and simplifying your ‘why’ is the most powerful thing any business owner can do. Period. Now, what’s your why?
Cool Process: The Power of One: One Thing Until Done
This week’s Cool Process is pretty simple to say but sometimes tough to follow. I’ll give a few tips on how to make it happen. It’s all about the Power of One, meaning, stick to one thing until it’s complete. We’ve heard this since we were babies. For some people it’s super-easy to do. Others, like myself, can have a hard time sticking to one particular task at a time. I enjoy working on whatever captures my interest. Sometimes I’ll delve deep into the subject for hours. Other times I’ll cover 20 different things in the span of an hour.
When it comes to completing tasks though, I like to stick with just one thing. I tackle large tasks so breaking them up into smaller pieces really works well for me.
I’ve often felt focusing on the ‘one’ sacrifices the many. For instance, one target audience, I hate focusing on just one and a super-small one at that. That’s something all of the marketing experts espouse, myself included. It’s still a tough thing to do. The way I make it happen: I do focus on one small niche but I’m constantly developing content and ideas for the other areas of interest inside me.
When I create in high volumes, I’m bound to come up with one stroke of genius, so I just keep going. That’s the inspiration for this podcast. I realize not every idea is life-changing, but I know consistency is, and one-by-one I’m building up a library of workable ideas and inspiring actions that have the power to change your world, when implemented! Focus on the Power of One – and one more, and another after that.

I’m all over email as it still is the source for a lot of my adventures in lead generation online. I use a tool to help me see my true leads and set aside the emails that aren’t urgent. It’s called unroll.me and it’s something I’ve used for a year now. It puts my subscription emails into a digest and sends me one summary email per day with all of those emails in it. I get to choose which emails I want to “roll up” into a digest and which ones I still want to live in my inbox.
The good news is the emails that I roll up are shown as “read” in my inbox. So when I do get a genuinely new email notification, I read it right away knowing it’s super important.
I study emails for a living so I’m subscribed to hundreds of email lists. Unroll.me gives me the chance to binge-read all of the marketing emails I get from my favorite marketers and pick up new techniques all at once. It’s great.
You may wonder, “What if I want to see which emails I coming in throughout the day? How do I do that?” If you’re using gmail as your main place to read emails, then unroll.me create a folder for you. Book Review of the Week: Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Why Others Die by Chip Heath and Dan Heath
Chip and Dan Heath have gone on to write other books, but none as well-known as their first, “Made to Stick.” Published in 2007, it’s said to be inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point.” I think it’s cool two brothers co-authored a book.
I love it even more that they almost nailed the evolution of how an idea takes flight while some ideas never get off the ground. The book is broken up into six sections as an acronym spelling out SUCCES – that’s success without the last ‘s.’ To me, they could have skipped one of the Cs and combined the sections called ‘Concrete’ and ‘Credible.’ I believe the two are the same and people usually see that over time with any workable idea. It’s the time factor that really takes effect here.
It’s a really rich book filled with one of the key element for any solid modern business book; stories. Some call them case studies. One story many people mention is the one about Nora Ephron and how she was given a series of facts to report to her fellow students. The first sentence is usually the most important so they call it “the lede.” Chip and Dan Heath tell of how Ephron and her classmates came up with several different lead sentences but only one really hit the mark. It was the sentence that conveyed the most important information to the target audience – other students at the school. The students were most interested in the fact that there would be no classes on a particular day. That was a valuable lesson for Ephron and by extension for the readers of Chip and Dan’s book.
The two esses that bookend their work shows how Chip and Dan Heath really understand the concept of ideas and which ones are made to stick. Simple ideas conveyed through stories are the ones that stick.
Check out the book. I highly recommend getting to it before writing your next sales page or running your next product launch. It’s good inspiration for when you have a powerful idea and you want it to live in the hearts of your desired audience.
One more thing: I’ve found when listening to stories I often find myself saying, “That is me.” Or, “I wish that was me.” A powerful story works when I see myself possibly being in the story. I may be winning. I may be losing. I may be having a hard time. Whatever it is, when I see myself, the rest of the things in Chip and Dan Heath’s book take place; it becomes concrete. It becomes unexpected. It becomes emotional.
Simple stories successfully stick.
